How to Wear a Green Suit: Every Shade, Shirt, Tie and Shoe

, by Marty Babayov, 19 min reading time

Dark green, emerald, olive or sage? Our owner shares how he wears green, plus the best shirt, tie and shoe colors for each shade.

Quick answer: A green suit works for weddings, holiday parties, fall events and even the office, as long as you pick the right shade. Dark green (forest or hunter) is the easiest to wear and dresses up like navy. Olive is earthy and relaxed. Sage is soft and best for spring and summer. Emerald is bright and made for evening events. With almost any green suit, a solid white or cream shirt and dark brown shoes are a safe match.

More men are asking about green suits. Our Google Business Profile shows the searches people use when they find our Oak Park store. From June to November 2026, "green suit" and "green suits" got 740 searches, compared with 494 for "black suit" and "black suits." Add shade searches like "dark green suit," "emerald green suit" and "sage green suit," and green suits had about 1,640 searches. That is more than any other suit color in our profile data, including black (about 1,030).

Our owner, Marty Babayov, wears green suits himself. This guide to green suits for men shares what we see on our sales floor: which shades sell, what to wear with them, and when to wear each one. You can shop every shade in our men's green suits collection or try them on at our Oak Park suit store.

The 5 Main Shades of Green Suits for Men

"Green" covers a lot of colors. The shade decides where you can wear the suit and what goes with it. Start here, or see all green suits side by side.

1. Dark green suit (forest green and hunter green)

Styled as a formal three-piece look with black shoes. For work and casual wear, Marty pairs it with dark brown.

A dark green suit is the easiest green to start with. It is popular with men who enjoy fashion and want a suit that is a little different, but not loud. Our Tovaglia Solid Dark Green Suit is one of the most popular choices with these customers.

"I personally wear the Tovaglia dark green suits and have a few forest green suits, and I get so many compliments on them. From a distance, they look like any other suit. But when you get close, you can see the color. And when you pair it with other earth tones, the green really comes out."

Marty Babayov, owner, The Suit Depot

How Our Owner Wears a Dark Green Suit

Marty's formula is simple: let the green be the star, and surround it with earth tones.

  • Shoes: dark brown leather for work, or dark brown suede for a more casual look. Suede is great when you skip the tie and wear the collar open. On the rare times he wears it more formally, he switches to black.
  • Tie: brown, like a brown grenadine tie, or any tie with orange in it. "The orange, brown and green really come together well," Marty says.
  • Shirt: a solid white shirt. Marty likes the high contrast.

White or cream? It depends on your contrast. Your "contrast" is how much your hair color differs from your skin tone. Men with dark hair and lighter skin have high contrast, and a crisp white shirt looks sharp on them. Men with lower contrast, like blond hair and light skin, often choose a cream shirt to lower the contrast a bit. Learn more about contrast in our guide to matching your shirt and tie.

Green Suit Color Matching Chart

Here are the safest shirt, tie and shoe colors for each shade.

Suit shade Best shirts Best ties Best shoes and belt Best season
Dark / forest / hunter Solid white, cream Brown, orange, burgundy, navy Dark brown leather or suede; black for formal Fall, winter
Emerald White Black, black bow tie, gold Black Evening, holidays
Olive White, cream Brown, rust, burgundy Medium or dark brown Fall
Sage White, light blue Light pink, navy, tan Tan, light brown Spring, summer
Mint / light green White No tie, or a light tie Tan, white sneakers (casual) Summer

What Shoes Go With a Green Suit?

Brown shoes go with almost every green suit. Brown and green are both earth tones, so they work well together. Use this simple rule:

  • Dark greens (forest, hunter): dark brown leather for work and most events. Dark brown suede for a relaxed look with no tie. Black for formal events, like a three-piece look at an evening wedding.
  • Light greens (sage, mint, olive): tan or medium brown.
  • Emerald and green tuxedos: black, for evening and formal events.

Skip black shoes with sage or mint. The contrast usually looks too strong. Match your belt to your shoes. Shop our men's dress shoes, or read which dress shoe styles every man should own.

Shirt and Tie Colors for a Green Suit

Best shirt colors

  • Solid white: the safest choice with any shade, and the best pick for high contrast.
  • Cream: softer than white. A good pick for low contrast, and very good with olive and dark green.
  • Light blue: good for the office and daytime events, especially with sage.
  • Light pink: a fresh choice for sage at spring weddings.

Best tie colors

  • Brown: our top pick for dark green and olive. A brown grenadine tie adds texture without adding a pattern.
  • Ties with orange in them: orange, brown and green are a natural mix.
  • Burgundy or navy: safe, classic choices with any shade.
  • Gold or mustard: a festive choice for holiday events.
  • Light pink: soft and fresh with sage.

Skip a green tie that matches your suit. It makes the outfit look flat. Browse our dress shirts, ties and grenadine ties, or see our guide on matching dress socks to your suit.

When to Wear a Green Suit

Weddings

Green is a popular choice for wedding suits. For grooms and groomsmen, pick the shade by season: sage for spring and summer, dark green or emerald for fall and winter. Guests can wear any green, but check the dress code first.

When the whole wedding party wears sage, how does the groom stand out? Here is what we tell grooms:

  • Go a shade darker. Put the groom in a darker green, like hunter green, next to sage groomsmen.
  • Add a detail. A matching vest or another small detail sets the groom apart.
  • Go custom. Groomsmen wear off-the-rack suits, and the groom gets a custom suit in a different shade of green. We offer custom suits in our Oak Park store.

Holiday parties and New Year's Eve

Dark green and emerald are great choices for the holidays. Add a white shirt, a brown, burgundy or gold tie and dark shoes. For a dressier look, wear a green tuxedo with a black bow tie.

The office

Yes, you can wear a green suit to work. Choose dark green or olive in a solid color. Wear it with a white or light blue shirt and a brown or navy tie. Keep the rest of the outfit simple. Read more in what color suits to wear to the office.

Dressed down

Olive and sage are the easiest greens to dress down. With dark green, swap the tie and dress shoes for an open collar and dark brown suede shoes. You can also wear the suit with a white T-shirt or a knit polo and white leather sneakers. In cold weather, try a cream or gray turtleneck under the jacket. For more ideas, see four ways to dress down a suit.

Prom and homecoming

Emerald and hunter green are great for prom. They stand out in photos. A green tuxedo with a black bow tie is a classic prom look.

"Isn't a green suit too loud?"

A lot of customers think green will be too loud. Then they try one on and fall in love with it. Marty talked a close friend into a green suit for his brother's wedding. It was an informal event, and his friend had planned to wear a blue suit. He went with green instead and got a lot of compliments. "I hear it all the time," Marty says. "It's just the right amount of different."

Budget Green Suit or Wool Green Suit?

Our green suits come at very different price points, like the $159 Raphael and the $499 Tovaglia in 100% wool. Here is how to choose:

Raphael ($159) Tovaglia ($499)
Fabric Synthetic 100% wool
Best for One evening, or a few wears Men who wear suits often
Comfort You will sweat more in it More comfortable
Drape Doesn't drape quite as well Drapes well, and keeps draping well over time

Our advice: if you need to look great for one event, the Raphael is a smart buy. Once it is altered correctly, it will look much better than a rental. If you wear suits often and want comfort and a better drape over time, the Tovaglia is worth it.

Green Suit Styles: 2-Piece, 3-Piece, Double-Breasted and Tuxedo

Fit tip: a good fit matters more with a bold color, because people look at the suit more. Your jacket should lie flat across your shoulders, and the pants should touch the top of your shoes with little or no break. Most suits need small changes to fit right. Read do you have to tailor your suit?

5 Green Suit Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Too many patterns and colors. We see this a lot. Green attracts men who love fashion, and they want to add more. But the green is the unique part. When you mix in too many patterns and colors, you pull attention away from the suit. A solid white or cream shirt lets the suit do the talking.
  2. Wearing the wrong shade for the season. Sage at a winter night event or emerald at a summer lunch both look out of place.
  3. Matching your tie to your suit. A green tie with a green suit looks flat. Use brown, orange or another contrast.
  4. Black shoes with light green. Pick tan or brown instead.
  5. Skipping the tailor. A bold suit that fits badly gets noticed for the wrong reasons.

Green Suit FAQs

What color shirt goes with a green suit?

A solid white shirt is the safest match for any green suit and looks best on men with high contrast, like dark hair and lighter skin. Men with lower contrast, like blond hair and light skin, often look better in cream. Light blue and light pink also work with sage.

What shoes go with a dark green suit?

Dark brown leather is our top pick for a dark green suit. Dark brown suede works for a more casual look with no tie. For formal events, black shoes work well too, especially with a three-piece dark green suit.

What color tie goes with a green suit?

Brown is our top pick for dark green and olive, and ties with orange in them also work very well. Burgundy, navy and gold are safe choices too. Avoid a solid green tie that matches the suit.

Is a green suit good for a wedding?

Yes. Sage is very popular for spring and summer wedding parties. Dark green and emerald work best for fall, winter and evening weddings. A groom can stand out by wearing a darker green, adding a vest, or getting a custom suit in a different shade.

Is a cheap green suit worth it?

Yes, if you only need it for one event or a few wears. A budget suit that is altered correctly looks much better than a rental. If you wear suits often, a 100% wool suit is more comfortable and drapes better over time.
